It shows what we are capable of when we come together. I can’t even describe how good of a feeling it is for the restaurant industry right now to have something to talk about. January 6th was one of the scariest moments ever on Capitol Hill, for everyone, and to come out of it in a way of standing united gave us a great opportunity, especially for the local businesses, to band together. With the National Guard in our backyard, it was so empowering to come together to host them and show support locally in the community. There were people all over the country, and even the world, donating. We had an overwhelming and amazing amount of responses. It all continued to evolve at a very fast pace. And we were like, "Oh, wait a second, this is going to be something really interesting." We quickly set up a donation link and hit the press circuit to see what would happen. People started calling and asking us if they could buy pizza to donate to the National Guard. We wanted to be part of this and assist in whatever ways we could.Įverything happened so organically and spread fast on social media. Pictures began to surface of the troops and the congresswomen and congressmen handing out pizzas to them. Once we realized it was going to the National Guard protecting our Capitol, we quickly doubled that order. Could you share with us more on how this came to be and how it went?īefore the inauguration, a congresswoman had ordered about 25 pies from our restaurant, We the Pizza, on Capitol Hill. I literally was born into the world of food and service. My mother was a chef, and my family restaurant business back to Montreal with a ton of restaurants and even some famous ones. I grew up surrounded by food and restaurants my entire life. I'm a specimen of the restaurant industry. How and when did you find a passion for food? You are definitely a force to be reckoned with in the culinary world. It was obvious he had a full plate as he prepared to feed the National Guard in his town. I loved this conversation with Spike and hope you do too! It was a privilege to share virtual space with him as we both were cooling down from a very intense past few weeks. The day after President Biden’s inauguration, I jumped on a Zoom call with Washington, D.C.- based celebrity chef and entrepreneur Spike Mendelsohn, to discuss everything from food policy to culinary role models and more.
